Uttar Pradesh: Aligarh Municipal Corporation moves to rename city Harigarh

The Aligarh Municipal Corporation unanimously passed a resolution to rename Aligarh as Harigarh during a meeting held on November 6th. If the renaming becomes official, Aligarh will join a list of places in Uttar Pradesh that have undergone a change of name. These include Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj; Mughal Sarai, renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar; and Faizabad, which is now called Ayodhya. These changes in nomenclature are believed to be due to the existing names' association with Indian Muslim history.
