Jammu: Kashmiri Muslim students in medical college assaulted over criticism of a Hindutva film
Kashmiri Muslim students studying at Government Medical College, Jammu, were subjected to physical assaults by fellow students holding Hindutva ideologies and people outside the campus following a dispute regarding the Hindutva film "The Kerala Story," directed by Sudipto Sen. On May 14, Umar Farooq, a 22-year-old first-year medical student, and Haseeb Ahmad, a 23-year-old fourth-year medical student, were attacked by Hindu students from different batches within the college hostel. A student who participated in the protest against the assault on May 15 informed that a disagreement within an official WhatsApp group of first-year students about "The Kerala Story" escalated into the incident. Shashi Sudhan Sharma, the principal of GMC, announced that ten students from the hostel will be expelled for a period of two months, with restricted attendance at classes until the completion of the investigation. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Chandan Kohli, stated, "There has been an incident of a scuffle between some students and outsiders in GMC hostel Jammu. Cognizance of the matter has been taken, and an investigation is going on." A case has been registered under FIR No. 65/2023 u/s 147, 323 IPC.
